ICE CREAM FOR VOTES?
Ben & Jerry's Joins Rock the Vote to
Get Out the Vote in the New Hampshire Primary
SATELLITE NEWS FEED Monday, January 26, 2004 1:30 - 1:45 p.m. ET
WHO: Ben & Jerry's is partnering with Rock the Vote to help bring 20 million young voters to the polls in November. Polls showed 17% of Iowa caucus voters were aged 17 - 29, up from 9% in the 2000 Iowa caucuses. This age group turned out at a higher rate than 30 - 44 year olds (15% of Iowa voters). Ben & Jerry's and Rock the Vote are on the campaign trail in New Hampshire to make sure this new generation of voters continues to get to the polls for the primaries.
WHAT: In the spirit of democracy, Ben & Jerry's and Rock the Vote are weathering New Hampshire's sub-zero temperatures to urge people to vote in the primary. They're asking voters to take an "Oath to Vote" in exchange for a taste of Ben & Jerry's new Rock the Vote flavor, Primary Berry Graham - strawberry cheesecake ice cream with strawberries and a thick graham cracker swirl.
Since the New Hampshire weather is too cold for people to take off their mittens to sign a pledge to vote, students at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, as well as volunteers at the Democratic candidates' campaign offices in Manchester, who recite the oath, will be rewarded with a taste of the new Rock the Vote flavor.
In addition to reminding ice cream fans about the importance of voting, a portion of the proceeds of Primary Berry Graham will go towards Rock the Vote, to support its efforts to register new voters and get more people involved in the political process.
Oath To Vote
I will rock the vote
I will not be too busy
I will not get caught up with other things
I will not just forget
I affirm this oath
With each delicious bite
On January 27th -- I will vote!
